Why It’s Challenging to Love Yourself

Why is it so difficult to treat ourselves with loving kindness? Each person’s journey through life is personal and complex. But in my experience as a spiritual teacher and reiki healer, I’ve seen several common themes among my clients over the years.

Here are some common reasons why it might be challenging for to express self-love:

1. Negative Self-Talk: Persistent negative thoughts about yourself can erode self-esteem and make it difficult to cultivate self-love.

2. Comparison: As they say, comparison is the killer of joy. In this age of social media, we are constantly bombarded with marketing that can lead to feelings of inadequacy and hinder self-acceptance.

3. Unrealistic Expectations: Do you tend to hold yourself to ridiculously high standards? You’re not alone. Setting unrealistically high standards for yourself can create a constant sense of falling short.

4. Past Trauma: Previous experiences of trauma, abuse, or difficult relationships can impact self-perception and make it challenging to love yourself as you deserve to be loved.

5. Social Conditioning: Societal expectations and cultural influences can contribute to internalized beliefs about what is considered acceptable or worthy, affecting self-esteem.

6. Fear of Judgement: The fear of being judged by others or not meeting external expectations can lead to self-doubt and self-criticism (this has always been a hard one for me).

7. Lack of Self-Awareness: Sometimes, it’s hard to fully appreciate your own strengths. That’s where this list can help!

It’s important to recognize that self-love is a journey, and overcoming these challenges often involves self-reflection, self-compassion, and seeking support when needed. So give yourself permission to reach out for professional guidance as you see fit.

How To Use This List

The act of creating your list is a powerful self-love activity! But I want you to consider this list a living thing – a working tool – to support your self-love practice.

Here are some suggestions on how you can make the most of your self-love list:

  • Turn them into affirmations
  • Use the as journal prompts
  • Add them to your vision board
  • Repeat them as meditation mantras
  • Read through them after a hard day
  • Pick one as a theme of the day

More Ways to Love Yourself

I hope this list of things to love about yourself inspired you! There are so many ways to practice self-love. Here are a few more ideas for you to explore.

Redirect negative self-talk. Start noticing your inner voice. Is it kind and loving, or harsh and critical? In my experience, I have found that we are way, WAY harder on ourselves that we’d ever be on anyone else. So, the next time you catch your inner critic getting out of hand, re-frame your words as if you were talking to your very best friend. It’s amazing how quickly your dialog will shift.

Use essential oils. I’ve been a certified Aromatherapist for years, as well as a reiki master. Every single one of my healing sessions includes aromatherapy, because there’s a super powerful connection between your emotions and your sense of smell. Here’s the blend I recommend to support your self-love practice:

Focus on chakra healing. When you’re working on self-love, I recommend you focus on two chakras: solar plexus and heart.

Your solar plexus chakra is all about the relationship you have with yourself. When its in balance, you feel:

  • confident
  • decisive
  • self-trusting
  • worthy
  • empowered

So you can see why healing this energy center plays an important role in your self-love practice.

On the other hand, your heart chakra is home to your sense of self-love, which is why I recommended the Heart Chakra oil blend above. This energy center is home to all matters of the heart:

  • compassion
  • self-love
  • forgiveness (yourself and others)
  • life’s sweetness

You can learn how to heal your heart chakra here: How To Open Your Heart Chakra In Minutes

Conclusion

In conclusion, practicing self-love is a transformative journey that involves acknowledging and nurturing the unique qualities that make you who you are.

By engaging in activities that promote self-awareness, acceptance, and care, you will carve out a beautiful path of personal growth.

Whether through mindful practices, creative expressions, or moments of relaxation, each act of self-love contributes to a positive self-image and a more fulfilling life. Remember, the journey of self-love is ongoing, and each intentional step you take becomes a celebration of your worth and a testament to the love you cultivate for yourself.

Embrace the journey, cherish your uniqueness, and continue to nurture the relationship with the most important person in your life – you.

XO, Andrea
