Emily Barnes, an Edmonton local, reveals that this year's Christmas will be a frugal affair. "It's going to be a minimal Christmas," she says, a sentiment echoed by many. Aaron Sasvari, another resident, has turned to second-hand gifts to maintain the same level of generosity.

This isn't an isolated case; a recent study by Money Mart and Angus Reid confirms it. Out of 1,511 Canadians surveyed, most admitted that inflation is significantly affecting their holiday spending. Alberta, with its 83% response rate, takes the lead in this struggle, with 61% of Albertans planning to cut back on gifts compared to last year.

The study identifies the cost of living and tariffs as the primary factors influencing Canadians' holiday shopping. Kalen emphasizes, "Inflation and tariffs are the main drivers, and even though inflation is decreasing, we've endured five years of mid to high single-digit inflation."
Sasvari's dilemma is a common one: "I spend more on essentials like milk, leaving less for other things." Barnes adds, "With grocery prices rising, I might host a smaller dinner and buy fewer presents."
