The gaming industry is facing some turbulent times, and the recent news from Eidos-Montreal is a prime example. The studio, known for its creative output, is undergoing a series of layoffs, leaving many talented individuals searching for new opportunities.
Eidos-Montreal, the powerhouse behind Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy and other iconic titles, has seen a wave of departures over the past week. Former employees took to LinkedIn to share their experiences, with gameplay director Samuel Daher expressing his love for the company but acknowledging the challenging times. At least a dozen employees have been affected, and this is not the first round of layoffs for the studio.
But here's where it gets controversial... The studio's parent company, Embracer, has remained tight-lipped about the reasons for these layoffs. While it was initially stated that the cuts were due to project mandates ending, recent reports suggest a different story. Multiple sources have revealed to Insider Gaming that most projects at Eidos-Montreal have been canceled, and the studio's focus is now primarily on collaborations with Microsoft and Xbox.
And this is the part most people miss... There's an internal project, started in 2019, that sources claim is unlikely to recoup its costs. After the current projects are completed, additional staff reductions are already on the horizon. It seems the studio is undergoing a significant shift in direction.
Insider Gaming reached out to both Eidos-Montreal and Embracer for comments, but as of now, there has been no response. Embracer has a history of declining to comment on such matters, leaving the future of the studio somewhat uncertain.
So, what does the future hold for Eidos-Montreal? Will they bounce back and continue creating innovative games, or will these layoffs impact their creative output? Share your thoughts and join the discussion on our official Insider Gaming Discord server. We'd love to hear your insights!
