Steven Gerrard's Rangers Return: A Possible Comeback Story (2025)

A potential homecoming for Steven Gerrard is on the cards, as the former Liverpool legend is set to discuss a return to Rangers as their head coach.

The Return of the Hero?

Gerrard, a beloved figure in Scottish football, is reportedly in talks with Rangers, the club he led to their first domestic title triumph in a decade. But here's where it gets controversial: will Gerrard's return be a triumph or a risky move?

BBC Sport broke the news, revealing that Rangers are open to bringing Gerrard back, but they're waiting for the green light from the man himself. And this is the part most people miss: Gerrard's return isn't a done deal yet.

Rangers are currently in the process of filling the vacancy left by Russell Martin's sacking, and Gerrard is one of several candidates they're keen to speak to. However, Gerrard, with the backing of many fans, is now a leading contender for the role.

Gerrard's previous stint at Rangers, from 2018 to 2021, was a success, with the club winning their first league title in 10 years. But since his departure in November 2021, Rangers have failed to reclaim the championship.

After a disappointing 14th-place finish in his first season at Aston Villa, Gerrard was dismissed early in the following campaign. He then took charge of Saudi Pro League club Al-Ettifaq in July 2023 but left by mutual consent in January.

In a recent interview with Rio Ferdinand, Gerrard expressed his desire to return to management, stating, "I want to be at a team that's going to compete to win, because I think that suits me better."

Russell Martin's tenure at Rangers was short-lived, with just five wins from 17 matches, leaving the club in eighth place, 11 points behind leaders Hearts.

Gerrard revealed to the Rio Ferdinand Presents Podcast that he's had "five or six really interesting phone calls" since leaving Saudi Arabia, but the timing wasn't right then.

So, will Gerrard's return to Rangers be a triumphant comeback or a risky move? Only time will tell. What are your thoughts? Do you think Gerrard's return is a good idea, or is it a step too far? Let us know in the comments!
