Family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Rock of Ages Funeral Chapel in Tallahassee (222-3900). A native of Troy, he had lived in Tallahassee for nine years. He was employed with Florida Sheet and Metal Co. He was a Baptist.

He is survived by his wife, Ruby Nell Carter of Quincy; two sons, Byron Carter and Shelby Carter, both of Quincy; three daughters, Beverlyn Carter, Charlotte Carter and Sheneka Carter, all of Quincy; and four grandchildren. Dixie Chason Dixie Chason, 82, of Carrabelle died Wednesday in Carrabelle. The service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Carrabelle, with burial at Evergreen Cemetery. He was a Tallahassee City Commission candidate in 1963 and an Army veteran of World War II. He retired from Atlanta Life Insurance Co. after 43 years of service. Howell of Tallahassee; two daughters, Sonya Howell Bradford of Tallahassee and Carmen Howell Ferguson of Atlanta; a sister, Martha Howell Bowden of New York City; and three grandchildren.

A native of Calhoun County, he was a longtime resident of Tallahassee. He was a television technician and a member of Huntington Oaks Freewill Baptist Church. He is survived by two sons, Donald Johnson Jr. of Tallahassee and Wayne Johnson of Crawfordville; a daughter, Lisa Malinda Fults of Havana; his mother, Ophia S. Johnson of Tallahassee; two brothers, Bobby Ray Johnson and Clifford Johnson, both of Tallahassee: and three grandchildren.

DEATHS Cancer researcher Howard Temin Nobel Prize winner Howard Temin, a cancer researcher who campaigned against cigarette smoking, has died of lung cancer in Madison, Wis.

He was 59. Temin, a University of Wisconsin professor, shared the 1975 Nobel Prize in physiology with two other scientists for research into possible links between viruses and cancer. Temin, who did not smoke, campaigned for state laws to bar or limit smoking in public places and frequently spoke on the subject. Sabelo Phama, South African militant leader Sabelo Phama, the leader of a black South African nationalist group involved in attacks on whites, has died near Morogoro, Tanzania. Phama was commander of the Azanian People's Liberation Army, the military wing of the Pan Africanist Congress, which has claimed responsibility for a series of attacks on police and white civilians in the past 14 months.

The PAC initially opposed negotiations with the white minority government on ending apartheid. It later joined the talks and plans to contest the nation's first all-race election in April. Raymond Hare, former envoy to Egypt Raymond Hare, a career diplomat who served as a U.S. envoy to Egypt during part of the Suez crisis in 1956 has died in Washington. He was 92.

A Mideast specialist, Hare was ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Turkey and Egypt.
