Best Pigs in a Blanket Recipe | Simple. Tasty. Good. (1)Look at these cute little co*cktail sausages wrapped in bits of golden puff pastry… My very own pigs in a blanket recipe is a highly popular appetizer here in our family!

I love the name of these cute little appetizers: mini pigs in a blanket!

Have you ever heard of them before?

You can also find these little appetizer bites under the name of mini crescent dogs, pigs in a blanket with crescent rolls. In the UK however these pigs in blankets are often bacon wrapped sausages. Sausages in pastry are called sausages rolls over there.

Sausage Rolls

The very first time that I came across these delicious treats, I have to admit that I found their name was quite hilarious. I don’t make these piggies very often actually. I should however because they are soooo super easy and quick to make!

And a very popular finger food!

Now that I come to think of it, in a few weeks time I am going to a family reunion.

And I am actually in charge of appetizers and nibbles. So I could make this pigs in a blanket recipe and prepare a simple mayo and ketchup dipping sauce.

Dipping Sauce for Pigs in a Banket

How about I make them on the spot at my mom’s and ask my nieces and nephews if they want to give me a hand? They would definitely love that because they all love co*cktail sausages. But I will have to buy an extra portion.

Because I suspect that a couple of sausages might not see the inside of the oven!

But that is collateral damage in this case I guess.

Best Pigs in a Blanket Recipe with Russian Sauce

Kids will love this recipe for pigs in a blanket appetizers.

And I mean both making and eating them. Canned co*cktail sausages and puff pastry, what could possibly go wrong?

You can serve these pastry bites with a dipping sauce of your choice. For my recipe below I made a simple Russian sauce. The ingredients are very simple:mayo, ketchup, worcester sauce and lemon juice. Some even add vodka but I had none in my pantry.

Do you call this sauce Russian sauce as well?

Finger Food

Because in Belgium we mainly call it co*cktail sauce.

It is a popular mayo and ketchup dip. And it is the exact same sauce that you serve with a classic prawn co*cktail as well for starters.

You can turn it up a notch and make pigs in a blanket with cheese in it as well!

Then you should also check my mini ham and cheese crescents! Yet another easy puff pastry appetizer that you can easily make with kids!

  7. Or you just make a mix like I did! If the puff pastry becomes a little too soft to work with, put it in the fridge for 5 minutes and then go on assembling your piggies. Once all of the mini co*cktail sausages are coated in the pastry, place them on a baking tray lined with a sheet of baking paper. Beat the egg yolk with a little drop of water and use this egg wash to brush the piggies with. Do this with a soft brush.

  9. Bake the piggies in a preheated oven at 400°F (200°C) for about 20 to 25 minutes or until the pastry is cooked and the sausage rolls are nicely golden on top. Then remove them from the hot oven and let them cool a little. Place them on a serving plate together with the dipping sauce of your choice. Serve the piggies lukewarm.

Puff Pastry Appetizers

Appetizers, we love them!

Apart from this cute little pigs in a blanket recipe above, what other popular puff pastry appetizers do you often serve?

The very first one that comes to my mind are puff pastry palmiers.

Palmiers

Or those little butterfly shaped twists that can contain a variety of stuffings.

Take a look for instance at my green olive palmiers! It is a very easy recipe to make. You can put just about anything on it before you roll the dough up.

Chopped up sun dried tomatoes for instance. Or caramelized onions and cheese. And basil pesto. I have even seen them before with bacon and smoked salmon!

You can also make cheese sticks. Slice the puff pastry into strips, sprinkle them with grated cheese and then twist the pastry strips.

Bake them off to get a bread stick like appetizer.

Vol Au Vents

But I guess that the most popular puff pastry appetizer must be mini vol au vents.

Tiny puff pastry cups with a stuffing of chicken or crab meat or prawns in a creamy sauce. You can also stuff them with whatever you like. I bet that you must have heard of them before!
